Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)


The WUE Tuition Discount reduces the amount of standard tuition for eligible non-resident students. With the WUE Tuition Discount, the recipient pays no more than 150% of the standard resident tuition rate. Eligible states/provinces include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Northern Mariana Islands, South Dakota, Oregon, Washington, or Wyoming.

*Beginning with the Fall 2023 semester eligible first-year, first-time incoming freshmen applicants from the Republic of Palau will be considered for the WUE Tuition Discount at the University of Utah.

  • Recipients cannot pursue Utah residency status while receiving the WUE Tuition Discount
  • Recipients will pay no more than 150% of the standard resident tuition rate (excludes tuition differential charges and all fees), up to 18 hours per semester
  • Recipients generally cannot receive any other university merit award in combination with the WUE Tuition Discount
  • The WUE Tuition Discount cannot be declined or cancelled for a term that has ended unless stated the student is determined to have been ineligible

To be eligible for the WUE Tuition Discount, incoming freshmen students must:

  • Be a permanent resident of a WUE state or territory
  • Have a completed admissions application/file at the U by December 1, 2022
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher at the time of admission to the University of Utah

The WUE Tuition Discount for incoming freshmen students is renewable for up to 8 semesters (i.e., 4 years), or degree completion, whichever is earlier, provided recipients maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 at the U and successfully complete at least 24 credit hours each academic year (fall and spring semesters) unless on an approved leave of absence.

Beginning Fall 2023, the University of Utah offers the WUE Tuition Discount to transfer students from California, as well as those transferring from the College of Southern Idaho and the College of Western Idaho.

 To be eligible for the WUE Tuition Discount, transfer students must:

  • Be a permanent resident of a WUE state or territory
  • Have a completed admissions application/file at the U by February 1, 2023
  • At the time of admission to the U:
    • have an earned Associate’s degree or at least 45 earned transfer credits from the College of Southern Idaho or the College of Western Idaho, or
    • be a permanent resident of California with at least 30 earned transfer credits from an accredited college or university
  • Have a cumulative transfer GPA of 3.30 or higher at the time of admission to the University of Utah

The WUE Tuition Discount for transfer students is renewable for up to 4 semesters (i.e., 2 years), or degree completion, whichever is earlier, provided recipients maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 at the U and successfully complete at least 24 credit hours each academic year (fall and spring semesters) unless on an approved leave of absence.

  1. Submit your Common Application or Transfer Application
  2. Confirm with your high school counselor or Registrar's Office that they have sent your transcripts to the Office of Admissions
  3. Confirm with the Office of Admissions that your transcript was received
  4. Follow up with any request or additional information you received from the Office of Admissions
