Private Scholarships

Private scholarships are provided by organizations outside the University.  The organization or donor selects the recipient and sends the funds to the University of Utah in behalf of the recipient.  All correspondence should include the  student's name, University of Utah ID, and the organization/donor's disbursement instructions. Unless otherwise specified in writing from the organization, the University of Utah will assume the scholarship funds represent the full payment of the scholarship and will be applied to the current semester as long as the student is enrolled in at least one credit hour.

Organizations or donors should complete the External Scholarship Form below for each student in which they are wanting to award and submit it along with the check for the student.

Tuition Due Dates

Funds provided by organizations outside the University of Utah must arrive at least one month prior to the tuition due date.  Funds arriving after that date will be processed as quickly as possible, but students are responsible to pay all tuition and fee charges, including late fees, if processing does not occur in time.  Classes will not be held to facilitate late arrival of funds.  (In case scholarship funds do not arrive in time to pay tuition and fees, students may want to apply for a short-term loan at the Income Accounting Office.)

Tuition due dates for the 2023-2024 academic year are as follows:

  • Fall 2023 Semester:  September 1, 2023
  • Spring 2024 Semester:  January 19, 2024
  • Summer 2024 Semester:  May 22, 2024

Co-Payable Checks

When a donor issues a check co-payable to a student and the University of Utah, the student must come to the University Office of Scholarshps and Financial Aid to endorse the check before a credit can be applied to the student’s tuition bill. This may cause unnecessary delays.  To process scholarships in a timely manner, donors should make checks payable to the University of Utah, in the student’s behalf.

Scholarship Checks Sent Directly to the Student

Scholarship checks made out to the University of Utah but mailed to the student must be delivered or forwarded, with a cover letter, to the University Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at the University of Utah.

Releasing Grades to Private Donors

The 1974 Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act requires that, before disclosing information, the University obtains a written release from enrolled students.  Thus, the scholarships office at the University of Utah must have the student’s signed approval before releasing grades and/or financial information to private scholarship donors.  Please contact the scholarships office to sign a release of information.  However, when a student fails to meet established reasonable academic progress standards (SAT), the University will notify the donor and discuss how the scholarship should be handled.  The University will return scholarship funds to the donor, upon donor request.  Otherwise, we must have authorization from the donor before funds will be released.

Mailing Instructions

All correspondence should include the student’s name, University of Utah ID, and the donor’s disbursement instructions.  Donors should mail checks, payable to the University of Utah, with a cover letter to:
